iWater - Transforming Egypt’s water sector through innovative transdisciplinary partnerships
The iWater Project aims to transform Egypt's water sector through innovative transdisciplinary partnerships. By combining expertise from German and Egyptian universities, public, private, and civic sectors, this project focuses on integrated water resources management to address the challenges of water scarcity and sustainability.
General Project Objectives
The iWater Project focuses on enhancing water security in Egypt by fostering collaborations between German and Egyptian universities and various stakeholders.
Key objectives include
- strengthening university-business partnerships
- developing a master’s program in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) at Ain Shams Univeristy and Mansoura University, and
- integrating practical solutions into academic curricula.
In this collaboration, the iWater project will play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between practice partners and academic endeavors. On one hand, it will facilitate the translation of demands from the practice partners into curriculum and research design. On the other hand, it will facilitate the transfer of competencies and knowledge from academia to practical applications.

- The learning outcomes of the MSc IWRM program are specifically oriented towards the demands of the labor market in the water sectors and respond to the current challenges of sustainability transition in the region.
- The involved academic institutes and central units at the ASU and MU offer research-based, collaborative forms of teaching and learning – either in the curriculum, by central units in extra-curricular offers, and jointly with practice partners.
- Beyond the curriculum, sustainably implemented and formalized science-society and science-policy dialogues are established leading to the co-design of research project and subsequent funding of these.
