K³ competence modeling

To approach the topic of competencies for transformative scientific practice, the K³ team pursues an explorative-iterative competence modeling process in contact with the K³ program participants. Initial competence assumptions for transformative scientific practice relate to the three areas of Systems Thinking, Futures Literacy and Collaboration.

The first prototype of the K³ competence model links existing competence models (on future skills, sustainability competencies and scientific competencies) with relevant contributions on the topic of transformative science and university strategy position papers of TH Köln (basic regulations and transfer strategy). These were compared with subjective needs and requirements expressed by participants at previous K³ events.

The following areas of competence for transformative scientific practice were identified in this first step of the analysis:

  • Systems Thinking: Actors with a systematic understanding comprehend the modes of operation and possibilities of different fields of work and discourses, reflect on the connections between local and global action as well as personal and public interest and integrate these into their professional decisions.
  • Collaboration: Appreciative communication with different stakeholders and the implementation of cooperative, collaborative or co-creative processes are central to inter- and transdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Futures literacy: Transformative scientists imagine desirable (personal, organizational and societal) futures and create opportunities to realize latent potential in the present while dealing productively with uncertainty and change.

These competence areas form the basis for the K³ career development measures and are modeled further through ongoing research. The empty 'bubbles' in prototype 1 of the K³ competence model symbolize the emergence and openness of the process - until the end of 2026, data will be collected, analyzed and interpreted in contact with the K³ participants, and findings will be discussed in transfer workshops with various stakeholders. This will result in a competence model for transformative scientific practice. Please get in touch with us and share your thoughts on the implicaitons of transformative scientific practice in your work!
