Our Research Projects

Based on a knowledge-generating and solution-oriented approach, the Faculty and Institute assume responsibility for the further development of society. We focus on inter- and transdisciplinary research activities at national and international level.

  • AI4SusCo - Artificial-intelligence-based classification system for deforestation-free coffee

    The AI4SusCo project tackles the pressing issue of deforestation associated with coffee imports. In response to the European Union's EUDR Regulation, which bans imports of agricultural products linked to deforestation after December 31, 2020, the project aims to develop advanced technological solutions by employing deep learning methods for accurate detection of coffee crops and forests.   • iWater - Transforming Egypt’s water sector through innovative transdisciplinary partnerships

    The iWater Project aims to transform Egypt's water sector through innovative transdisciplinary partnerships. By combining expertise from German and Egyptian universities, public, private, and civic sectors, this project focuses on integrated water resources management to address the challenges of water scarcity and sustainability. More

  • COWASA

    Coordinated by the ITT and in cooperation with the Universities of Zimbabwe and Limpopo, COWASA aims at developping MSc education & research to improve water security in Southern Africa & Germany. Topics are water scarcity, droughts, urban floods, landslides, and water quality deterioration, aiming to create linkages between education and research in water security and climate change adaptation.   • REPLÂNTICA – Training programme for the restoration of the Atlantic coastal forest (Mata Atlântica)

    The REPLÂNTICA project – Capacity building in forest restoration: biodiversity and climate protection in the Mata Atlântica – unites science and practice. A user-oriented training programme for the biodiversity- and climate-friendly reforestation of degraded pastureland in Brazil is being collaboratively developed. More

  • Eastern Nile Research Universities and Centres (ENRUC)

    The Eastern Nile Research Universities and Centers (ENRUC) is a coalition of leading universities from Egypt, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Sudan, complemented by researchers from water ministries and civil society of these nations and from universities abroad that focus on issues related to the management of the Nile. More

  • Exploring Climate-Smart Agriculture Approaches, Practices, and Technologies (CSA-PAT) in Jordan

    This project between TH Köln and GJU aims to conceptualize a new joint research addressing the water-agriculture nexus in Jordan through guest visits and exploratory workshops. By exploring climate-smart agriculture methods and technologies, the goal is to boost irrigation water efficiency and farm productivity and foster economic and socially-inclusive agricultural systems.   • Adaptation to the consequences of climate change as a Living Lab Kolpingstadt Kerpen (ARKE)

    The objective of ARKE is to develop a strategy for adapting to the consequences of climate change for the Kolpingstadt Kerpen. This involves specifying threats from drought, floods, heatwaves, windthrow, or even hail through a comprehensive climate and vulnerability analysis and identifying local-specific measures (e.g., development of green-blue infrastructures) for the present and future.   • Integrated Water Resources Management in Kosovo

    The ‘Integrated Water Resources Management in Kosovo’ (IWRM-K) is a 12-year transformational Program of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Government of Kosovo. Its implementation has been entrusted to the Consortium of Skat Consulting Ltd., St. Gallen Switzerland, and the Environment Agency Austria. More
