Supporting the G20 Global Land Initiative, the Faculty of Spatial Development and Infrastructure Systems at TH Köln, in cooperation with high-ranking academic experts, has developed a new academic training for sustainable land restoration. The international project aims to train one million students & professionals in 20 years to counteract land degradation worldwide.

Training a new generation of experts in sustainable land restoration is the declared goal of a new course titled "Trigger Change! Innovative Sustainable Agriculture Solutions for Land Restoration". In line with the goals of the G20 Leaders’ Declaration in November 2020 to reduce land degradation and supporting the Global Initiative of the UN Convention on Desertification (UNCCD), it was designed in cooperation with an international consortium of university professors and experts in sustainable agriculture, including its university partners from the CNRD network.

Four international webinars

In order to extend the reach of the initiative and make it accessible to regional academics, researchers, practitioners and students around the world, TH Köln will organise a series of regional webinars and online trainings during 2024 and the first months of 2025. The first webinar, hosted by the German Jordanian University, took place on May 20th and attracted a large number of participants from both regional and global communities. The last webinar, hosted by Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia took place on June 25th, 2024.

Contributing to SDGs

The new course targets students and professionals enrolled in agriculture and related fields at universities and training institutions. The aim of the webinars and trainings is to introduce the course to the regional target groups and provide knowledge and tools for effective land restoration practices. The course emphasizes the commitment of TH Köln to contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through education and collaboration. It also stresses the important role of academic institutions in fostering innovation that addresses environmental sustainability and promotes global food security.
