Laboratory for Chassis and Suspension Simulation Technology

The main focus of the laboratory is chassis testing reaching from chassis components and systems to the entire vehicle with the help of numerous test benches as well as simulation-based imaging of elastokinematic and vehicle dynamical properties using rigid body and parameter models.

Activities

  • Kinematics and elastokinematics of the chassis (deflection, track, camber, wheel position changes, deformations under forces)
  • function, reliability and durability of chassis components, brakes and shock absorbers
  • center of gravity and moment of inertia determination
  • computer-based simulation of the movement processes and force conditions of vehicles and vehicle subsystems
  • trainings in the German and English language in the field of chassis technology and vehicle dynamics using axle models of all common types
  • national and international expert activities, e.g. in the field of wheel brakes
  • external and internal research projects with vehicle manufacturers and suppliers
  • final thesis on the above activities (approx. 10/per year)

Measurement equipment

In the laboratory for chassis and simulation technology, powerful computer systems are available for a wide range of measurement and control tasks both in stationary operation and for use in road tests.

For fully instrumented road tests, measuring steering wheels (RMS FEL 20/1) are used to record the steering torque, steering angle and steering angular velocity and a Datron Correvit to determine the vehicle movement (longitudinal and transverse velocity; yaw, roll and pitch angle).

The DIADEM program is used for recording measured values as well as for control tasks. A maximum of 48 measuring channels can be acquired simultaneously; currently, vehicle vibration tests are carried out with a simultaneous acquisition of 35 channels with a frequency of 1000 Hz each. After completion of the measurement, the recorded data is available for evaluation in all common file formats.

An optoelectronic measuring system allows the acquisition of any body contours or deformations of components. If a measuring mark is applied, this can be carried out contact-free with a measuring accuracy of 0.1 mm.
