Cologne Lab for Building Automation and Optimization (COLABO)
The COLABO laboratory is all about building automation. We develop new technologies and system concepts as part of research projects, and offer wide range of courses and topics for final theses.
In Germany, 36% of the final energy consumption is caused by the operation of buildings. Simply by optimizing existing system operation through efficient control and optimized building automation, around 25% of energy can be saved, costs reduced and maximum comfort ensured at the same time - and all of this completely automated. Optimizing buildings sustainably through automation? That's a good idea!
The Cologne Lab for Building Automation and Optimization (COLABO) is pursuing precisely this goal.
To this end, the basics are developed in the teaching modules of control engineering and building automation, building performance and elective modules in a practice-oriented training program. So that afterwards, everyone has the potential to simply make buildings and processes better through automation!
Development and research work on the digitalization of buildings and processes through smart information modelling (digital twins, Industry 4.0 administration shell, IFC, BIM), modular plant automation based on this and building performance applications are being developed in interesting third-party-funded research projects and as part of research-oriented student projects.
Artificial intelligence methods are used as an effective tool for the automation of processes. Examples include automated data preparation and information extraction (NLP), as well as adaptive control (reinforcement learning).
Our dedicated team is always happy to welcome new and motivated students, people interested in doctoral studies and employees who want to discover new things and improve existing ones.
